One of my favorite artists is David Williams of St. Petersburg. David recycles commercial and graphic images from the past and present to create a whole new dialogue with the world today. His website shows a variety of work from current and past shows. The one thing you cannot appreciate online are the wonderful surface textures he includes in every work. And he just keeps getting better with each new set of work.

Remember, buy art because it moves you, and if it clashes with the couch, get a new couch.

ReplyDeleteDavid Williams is one of the best deconstructivist painters on the planet. He is an elite painter in a very small club. The way he uses images from the past and the present goes beyond Einstein’s theory of bending time by contorting time into knots. His brilliance stems from a savvy choice of images that were created for advertising; images that were created to make emotions pop. All of the images used in advertising from the past and from the present have emotional objectives and immediate visual impact. When those manipulative images are expertly combined with instructive images from guide books or product manuals the effect can be illuminating. David Williams’ sensitivity to the illustrated image and its visceral power brings his work to life and makes it resonate with meaning.
ReplyDeleteSome catching up: Awesome!
